The Choir of Gonville and Caius College – CAMBRIDGE

In Praise of St Columba: The Sound World of the Ancient Celtic Church”.

The Choir of Gonville and Caius College

The Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge is the UK’s leading collegiate choir. The twenty-four singers and two organ scholars, under the direction of Geoffrey Webber, perform a wide range of sacred and secular choral music spanning the centuries. Alongside familiar repertoire from the Anglican choral tradition and beyond, the choir performs much new music and has commissioned works by composers such as Robin Holloway, James MacMillan, Judith Weir and Gabriel Jackson.

The Choir sings Chapel services during the University term and has a busy schedule of additional activities including concerts, recordings and broadcasts. The Choir travels extensively abroad, performing at a variety of venues ranging from major concert halls to universities, cathedrals and churches in Europe, America and Asia, often in connection with other professional ensembles such as Opera Northern Ireland, the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra of San Francisco, and the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine.

The Choir’s recordings feature music by composers as diverse as J. S. Bach, Samuel Wesley, John Rutter, Rebecca Clarke and Giacomo Puccini, plus a DVD of music by Francis Poulenc filmed with the choirs of Clare and St John’s Colleges.

Many of the pieces in this concert programme are featured on the choir’s highly acclaimed recording, In Praise of St Columba: The Sound World of the Ancient Celtic Church. This ground-breaking CD seeks to recreate three distinct sound-worlds: 7th-century hymns from Iona, 10th-century chants from Celtic foundations in Switzerland, and 14th century Columban antiphons from the Inchcolm libellus.

As well as the evidence of early notation and of drawings and other indications of instrumentation, the performance styles – developed in an exciting extended collaboration with scholar and piper Barnaby Brown – are informed by oral traditions from across Europe.

The Caius Choirbook is one of the most beautiful manuscripts of music dating from before the Reformation. Now housed in the library of Gonville & Caius College it is thought to have been compiled for use in St Stephen’s Chapel, Westminster, and contains settings of the Mass and Magnificat by the leading English composers of the day.
